If you watch every highlight reel ever made by fans or professionals, there are several moments that gets repeated in these clips. But for a team like the Montreal Canadiens, this might be impossible given the team’s illustrious history and the fact that a lot of the great moments were not shown on TV. But what fans have seen so far is still worth celebrating. Long-time Canadiens fan Pietro Triassi of Montreal City shares the 5 moments that will live forever in the hearts of Montreal Canadiens fans.


Passing the torch

For 72 years, the Montreal Canadiens called The Montreal Forum their home. Here, they won over 1,500 matches and 22 Stanley Cups. But after a 4-1 win against the Dallas Stars in 1996, the team bid farewell to the stadium in a Passing the Torch ceremony led by former team captains like Emile Bouchard to Maurice Richard himself.

5-peat
In 1960, the Canadiens had a chance to win their 5th Stanley Cup in a row. But standing in their way in the finals was their biggest rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Not only did the Canadiens win, they did so with a commanding 4 – 0 finish.

50 50
In 1944, no one has ever achieved scoring 50 goals in 50 games in one season. That is until Maurice Richards made the record. During the last game of the 1944-1945 season, their opponents, the Boston Bruins, played defensively all game long. Unfortunately, with 2:15 remaining on the clock, Richards was able to score and cement his legacy.

Red Army Gamy
After defeating the New York Rangers on December 28, the Russian hockey team Moscow Red Army came to Montreal during New Year’s eve for a match. Though the visiting team were tough, they were dispatched by Guy Lafleur, Bob Gainey, and Ken Dryden.

Koivu’s return
After Saku Koivu announced he was diagnosed with Burkitt’s lymphoma, Montreal’s Pietro Triassi and almost every Canadiens fans were shocked. But they stood by him in solidarity as he battled with cancer to get back into the rink. Less than a year later, Koivu would announce his return.
